Differences between HPL And PVC Materials in Furniture Vacuum Forming

HPL (High Pressure Decorative Fire-Resistant Board) material is usually hard and cannot be directly thermoformed like traditional PVC film using "paper vacuum forming". The related processes can generally be divided into two categories: HPL flat lamination, or "film pressing/wrapping" which is similar to vacuum forming.

The following is a detailed comparison of the relevant processes:

1. HPL flat pressing (flat hot pressing/cold pressing)

• Process principle: Flat HPL fireproof boards (such as those from brands like Formica and Wilsonart) are glued to MDF, plywood, or wood core boards using environmentally friendly wood glue (such as white glue or PUR hot melt glue). This is mainly used for flat door panels or countertops.

• Common tools: Large cold presses or hot presses are required to ensure a smooth fit.

• Features: Wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and high-temperature resistant, but cannot handle complex door panel designs.

2. Vacuum forming-like process: PVC film pressing / resin board covering (molded door panel)

• Process principle: If the cabinet door panel has a complex concave and convex shape, the manufacturer usually does not use HPL, but uses PVC film (or PP film) to heat-press and cover it with a vacuum forming machine.

• Flexible fireproof board/CPL: If fireproof and flame-retardant effects are required, the industry now offers flexible roll fireproof boards (such as CPL, which has similar components to HPL but is thinner), which can be molded and wrapped around the edges in one step using a vacuum forming machine.

• Common tools: Vacuum forming machine (which softens the film material by heating it at high temperature and then adsorbs it under vacuum negative pressure).
